Salt of the Earth

Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. Matt 5:13 (The Message)

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to be “the salt of the earth”. As salt we are called to work to prevent the decay sin causes in the earth, are vital to the very survival and function of the universe God created, and create thirst for God's righteousness.

Due to impurities in the Dead Sea, the salt sold during Jesus' time contained many other minerals. If not protected, this salt would become diluted and lose its potent flavor with time; it was then useless for any purpose other than repairing potholes in the road. We too are warned to be on guard against the dilution of the gospel in our lives so that we can maintain our potent saltiness in our service of Jesus Christ.
